Pullets Begin Laying Early

"MOOSE JAW, Sept. 17. - Arthur Searle, bird fancier, of 504 Fairford Street, East, claims to have the youngest laying pullets in the world. Three birds, four months and seven days of age, have contributed the acceptable offering of eggs, are doing it regularly in fact.

Mr. Searle says he has read in The Leader - of pullets of five months entering the laying class, but his are younger. They are bred to lay, he says, are barred rocks and never in his whole experience with fowls has he known of such early results. Dr. S. A. Merkley and Art Serviss, local poultry authorities, agree with him."

Young Laying Pullets

"To the Editor of the Leader.

Sir: - In yesterday's edition of your paper Mr. A. Searle, Moose Jaw, claims to have the youngest laying pullets in the world, his birds being four months and seven days old. I am afraid Mr. Searle will have to take second place, as I have a pullet hatched May 9, which started laying on September 4, which would make her only three months and 26 days old. Since September 4 she has laid 11 eggs. This pullet is an Ancona of our own raising. Last year our Ancona pullets started to lay when months old.

These birds, like Mr. Searle's, are from purebred Ancona stock and are bred to lay. The pullets of last year commenced to lay on August 26 and laid right through winter. They are very heavy laying stock. We have had birds of other breeds lay when five months old and thought nothing of it; but for early maturing, early and heavy layers these bred-to-lay Anconas are hard to beat. It might interest Mr. Searle and other poultry authorities to hear of these pullets. We hope to enter a pen of early laying Leghorn Ferris bred-to-lay pullets in the Dominion Egg Laying competition and also to show them at the winter fair.

A. E. Counsell,. Ft. Qu'Appelle, Sept. 18. 1924."
